Acting Directors Message
Dear Friends,
Our theme this year is "Christ in the Margins". At first glance the theme appears to depict Christ in a restrictive, confined manner. Nothing could be further from reality. Christ dared to be different. He challenged the political, cultural and religious structures of his time through his words and actions. He embraced the marginal people of his time. He went beyond conformity, the expected, the status quo.
In the introduction of her book Christ in the Margins Edwina Gately writes, "It is time for the people of God to stop marching along with the status quo in search of security, power and control, but to stumble instead toward the margins where we will encounter a magic and a mystery that will plunge us trembling but rejoicing into the Realm of God. It invites us into such a time and such a place where we will recognize the face of Christ – always new, always unexpected."
Today we are confronted with new challenges in our relationship with Mother Earth, political intrigue, economic instability, and church conformity and we often need encouragement to carry on the in the face of dark prospects. Historically we have many examples of people who dared to be different and have persevered with hope in difficult times seeking justice and the peace of Christ. Some contemporary inspirational examples of mentorships who worked for peace, justice and change are Eugene de Mazenod, Mother Teresa, Oscar Romero, Dorothy Day and Teilhard de Chardin.
We are challenged by our baptismal call to step out of our margins, to take up the cause of the marginalized and seek peace, justice and change. We need to be encouraged to accept the call through prayer, reflection, meditation, and action.
Queen's House can offer you the "magic and mystery" that will plunge you into an experience of Christ that will strengthen, stretch and encourage you to go beyond the margins to share God’s justice, peace and change in your parish, community and beyond. We encourage you to come to participate in one of the many programs we have offered here. Step out of the status quo for the opportunity to renew your strength for the journey into the margins and beyond with Christ.
